High-Performing Leaders Creating a High-Performing Culture

In this intense workshop that is designed for natural work teams and has The 10 Principles of Personal Leadership at its core, participants are given the opportunity to “look in the mirror,” explore how effectively their current beliefs and behaviors are serving them, receive feedback from teammates and the LeadQuest consultants, and determine what more they need to do to become high-performing leaders who can create a high-performing culture. At LeadQuest, we define high performance (HP) as being equal to desired results (DR) plus desired behaviors (DB): HP = DR + DB. Many of the leaders with whom we work get desired results, but do so in a manner that hurts morale and diminishes discretionary effort. These leaders struggle with how to model The 10 Principles, which includes delivering the appropriate consequences needed to build a healthy culture where employees “want to” produce high-performing results. In this program, we introduce LeadQuest’s evidence-based process for personal and organizational change which is based on the science of Applied Behavior Analysis. Additionally, using a proven experiential learning methodology, we help “unfreeze” existing beliefs and behavioral habits that get in the way of achieving high performance, and “refreeze” on new behavioral habits that can help every participant become even more successful.

Leadership in the 21st Century

Our workforce is in the midst of many major changes. One of the largest is the "Changing of the Guard," the 80 million Baby Boomers (born 1946 – 1964) who are retiring. More and more of today's employees are one of the 50 million men and women who were born between 1965 and 1982 – Generation X. Gen Xer's desire work/life balance, and the old rewards of money and promotions do not motivate them as much as things like recognition, challenging assignments, or time off without pay. They respect competency, not hierarchy, and want to see more of a "purpose" in what they do. Leaders and managers must learn the new skills necessary to effectively influence and motivate this changing workforce.

"Leadership in the 21st Century" prepares leaders and managers to meet this challenge by helping each participant gain a deeper insight into their personal leadership style, understand the characteristics of our changing workforce, and learn how they can effectively communicate with, motivate, and lead their teams. The critical outcome is a motivated workforce that willingly gives "discretionary effort," effort over and above the minimum necessary to do their jobs. Discretionary effort is the best kept secret in business today – it is what can produce extraordinary results for you and for your organization!

Leveraging Communication Styles to Improve Teamwork

"We have a problem with communications!" We have heard this over and over again from clients we work with, no matter what their business focus. Companies large and small tell us that this is one of their biggest problems. Ironically, in the age of email overload, PDAs, voice mail, cell phones and more, we still do not communicate well with our teammates. In order to work together productively and harmoniously, we must communicate effectively!

At LeadQuest, we believe that the problem lies with the quality, not the quantity, of communications. Just as people have different preferred learning styles, they also have very different preferred communication styles (see Principle 5 of The 10 Principles of Personal Leadership). Using The 10 Principles, participants learn about the strengths and challenges of each of the four communication styles, how their personal communication style may be perceived, and how to effectively communicate with each of the other styles. Participants also learn the necessity for clear, unambiguous communication by exploring the very different meanings well-intentioned people may assign to the same communication.

Building a High-Performing Team through Action Learning

Teamwork is the hallmark of high-performing teams; however, "teamwork" means different things to different people. Trouble often begins when teammates judge each other negatively based on their personal beliefs about what behaviors characterize effective and ineffective teamwork. Participants in "Building a High-Performing Team" learn about The 10 Principles of Personal Leadership and, in a safe environment, receive feedback on how well they work with others; this includes the impact their behaviors have on their teammates. . Using The 10 Principles, they make personal commitments about and create plans to guide their future behaviors on their team. Additionally, through a rigorous "Action Learning" process, they are given the opportunity to apply these commitments to a real-life business issue facing the team, and receive behavioral feedback in the process.

Effectively Using Feedback and Coaching to Improve Performance

Feedback (information about current performance) and coaching (a process to improve or strengthen performance) are critical to improving personal effectiveness. However, these highly effective tools are often not used skillfully in organizations. Some people believe giving feedback and coaching is difficult, takes a lot of time, and/or they simply dislike doing it. However, as Robert Louis Stevenson said, "The cruelest lies are often told in silence."

As leaders and managers, it is our obligation and accountability to become skilled at delivering effective feedback and coaching in order to influence the future behavior of our employees and to help them improve their performance. Participants will gain an understanding of their own beliefs about giving and receiving feedback, learn a proven methodology to deliver both appreciative and constructive feedback, and practice giving and receiving feedback using "real-life" business scenarios. The 10 Principles of Personal Leadership play a prominent role in this program.

The Magic of Building an Accountable Organization

Think for a moment about the most accountable team of which you have ever been a part. What were the distinguishing characteristics of that highly-accountable team? What characterized the way its teammates related to one another? How did it feel being a part of that team? One of our clients said it this way, "It was a magical experience!"

LeadQuest facilitators will help your team gain a deeper understanding of the difference between personal responsibility and accountability (see Principle 7 of The 10 Principles of Personal Leadership), and learn how teammates need to behave with each other to become more accountable as individuals and as a team. "The Magic of Building an Accountable Organization" is of particular importance to newly formed teams, before any "bad habits" take root. Additionally, in the spirit of continuous improvement, established teams have used this program successfully to strengthen the way they work together to achieve better business results.

Leading Change

Charles Darwin said, "It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change!" The same holds true for organizations, where tremendous change (at a rapid pace) has become the norm. Leaders must personally adapt to these changes everyday, and they must help others do the same. In other words, leaders must become highly resilient and accountable, and highly skilled as teaches, coaches and mentors (see Principle 10 of The 10 Principles of Personal Leadership).

Guided by your LeadQuest consultant, you will learn how to become a role model for change (i.e., "a change agent"), and learn to effectively communicate your vision and recognize the various forms resistance to change can take so you can overcome them. Additionally, you will learn a proven framework for implementing change, and how to design the support mechanisms essential to drive success.

Leaders as Role Models

There is a story told about how a general was leading his officers through a teambuilding seminar and the facilitator asked, "If you were a weapon, which weapon would you be?" The hard-charging general answered first, and in a loud, gruff voice said, "I'd be a tank!" What do you think every junior officer said they wanted to be? Right, a tank!

Team members mirror the behaviors of their leaders, both positive and negative ones. Leaders set the tone and the accepted behavioral norms for their organizations through their own behaviors. A wise leader knows this and recognizes the necessity of sending the right messages. LeadQuest's consultants help each participant discover the impact his or her behavior has on others, as well as the beliefs behind the behaviors, enabling personal growth. As Gandhi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." The 10 Principles of Personal Leadership are at the core of this program.
